American Pistachios are a good source of plant-based protein that comes with several health benefits. It is advised to include them in your everyday food intake because of the perfect balance of nutrients it contains. It has a perfect mixture of carbohydrates, healthy fats, proteins, fibers, minerals, vitamins, and water in it. It helps in lowering fat and cholesterol in blood thus reduces the chances of heart attacks. Also, it helps in controlling blood pressure and helps in healthy weight loss as well. Pistachios improve the health of eyes and guts. Kids also love Pistachios due to their crunchiness, distinctive, and different flavor.
American Pistachio Growers (APG) organized a virtual knowledge session on 27th May 2020 with Dr. Mike Roussell, Globally Renowned Nutrition Consultant, Author and Advisor, based in the USA to create awareness about the importance of protein intake for both children as well as adults and informing people about Pistachios being declared as a “complete” protein after detailed research.
Recently it was announced that a new analysis shows that U.S. grown roasted pistachios meet the generally accepted definition as a “complete protein,” meaning they join the ranks of a small number of plant proteins such as quinoa, chickpeas, and soybeans that have become popular among vegetarians and consumers who wish to move away from animal proteins.
Dr. Mike Roussell said that “the research showing that American Pistachios are a complete protein is extremely important because it shows that they contain nine essential amino acids that your body needs in a form that is readily absorbable and available for your body to use. This is unlike other plant proteins that are incomplete and where you need to add other complementary proteins to get the essential amino acids.”
The Food and Drug Administration defines a “complete” protein as a food that contains adequate amounts of all nine essential amino acids (the protein building blocks that our body does not naturally produce and need from food). The protein quality of pistachios was assessed for the first time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The study determined that pistachios contain all 9 essential amino acids necessary for supporting growth and maintaining health for those 5 years and older, therefore they are a “complete” protein.
So, giving kids a handful of Pistachios in the morning can be good to start their day and keep them energetic for long. Also, it can be added as the main nut in nutbars, morning breakfast bowl , and a lot more. We already use in some of the famous Indian dishes like Pista halwa, Pista biscuits, or Pista kulfi.
American pistachios are your one-stop-shop as a source of plant-based protein. They are portable, they do not need to be cooked, you can enjoy it as an anytime snack wherever you are.
