Being the mother of two kids is not easy. Also, the upbringing, nature, and traits of two kids are never the same. while my daughter is sensible and sophisticated, my boy is naughty and stubborn. Since his birth he has given me all the difficulties and problems. Not only he is a less sleeper but also cries a lot, which later his ped described as colic.
What is Colic??
From the very second week of his birth, my son used to have bouts of intense, loud, and inconsolable crying, for no apparent reason, for three hours or more a day. Initially, I thought it will get normal by time but sooner realized there are some health issues with him. I used to wake up for day and night, try to soothe him but that’s of no use. Later he was diagnosed as a colic baby. Colic is prevalent in more than one-fifth of all the babies. The severe pain in the abdomen caused by wind or obstruction in the intestines and suffered especially by babies.
What causes Colic??
Even the best of doctors could not find out a valid reason for colic.
- The digestive system in infants is still developing which may cause discomfort.
- Infant being sensitive to some of the substance in breast milk or formula milk.
- Acid reflux may be making the baby feel uncomfortable.
- The extra gas in an infant’s stomach can cause colic.
- Some peds also suggested that crying makes infant swallow unwanted air which can cause colic.
- Infants overstimulated by the environment can also be affected by this.
Symptons of Colic in babies??
Initially, it is hard to differentiate between normal crying and colic but here are the few symptoms of Colic that can help you diagnose it easily.
If an infant is crying for no apparent reason means there is a time when you can find out he is not hungry or need the diaper change.
The infant looks restless, in pain and try to throw his legs and arms for no reason.
He extends his legs or pulls them up to his tummy. If his tummy is stiff, it may indicate he is colic baby.
Facial discoloring, such as reddening of the face. He has a red or flushed face while crying.
He clenches his fists while crying. Bodily tension, such as pulled up or stiffened legs, clenched fists, arched back, or tense abdomen.
Predictable timings, mostly in the late hours or evening.
Natural remedies to treat colic in babies at home
- Make sure that burping is done frequently. This will help in alleviating gas, which could be a cause of discomfort that results in your baby’s continuous crying.
Feed your baby whenever he seems hungry, not necessarily on a set feeding schedule. Feed him frequently and in the small amount.
Rocking the baby gently in arms, cuddle him/her, or take on a car ride.
Place your baby across your lap, tummy down, and rub her back. It will ease him from the discomfort of the stomach.
Pacifiers are seen to be of great use to calm down the colic baby.
Tummy message or warm water bath can soothe the infant.
The foods that you eat are passed on to your breast milk. Your diet could be the cause of your baby’s digestive problems. You should avoid foods that are spicy, citrus fruits, caffeinated beverages, and dairy products. This could help in preventing or relieving symptoms of colic.
During Colic gripe water is definitely a try. It is an age-old remedy to cure colic in babies. But be cautious before choosing them as may contains preservatives.
There are two sure shot ways which relieve your baby from colic. but please make sure overdose of them can cause a problem.
- Ajwain/ Carom seeds: Boil half tsp of Ajwain in half glass water. Boil for 5-7 minutes. And keep it aside to cool down. Now, give 3-4 drops of this water to the infant for two times a day. Increase the quantity as an increase in age.
Hing/ Asafoetida: For this, you need to have the pure/good quality of hing at home. Dissolve a very small part of Asafoetida (equivalent to 2-3 mustard seeds) in water. Now with the help of cotton spread it slightly near the navel of the infant. In a few minutes, you will find a difference.
First Oil message on the tummy of the infant. And then give him a tummy bath with hot water or tummy spa with a towel soaked in hot water.
